Exercise-Related Hormone May Help Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease

A recent study has found evidence that exercise helps promote the production of a hormone known as irisin, which could play a role in preventing Alzheimer’s disease. Specifically, irisin may enhance the activity of neprilysin, an enzyme that helps reduce abnormal amyloid beta protein in the brain.

Previous studies have shown that levels of irisin are reduced in human brains affected by Alzheimer’s as well as in animal models of the disease, suggesting that it may help protect cognitive function and defend against neurodegeneration.

In the latest study, researchers used a three-dimensional (3D) human neural cell culture model and determined that irisin works by reducing amyloid beta burden, one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s. Still, more human research is needed to fully confirm irisin’s potential benefits.

Irisin is secreted by muscles during exercise and plays many roles in the body, including helping regulate glucose and lipid metabolism in fat tissue. All types of exercise can increase levels of irisin, but resistance training may be the most effective.

Particulate Air Pollution Linked to Increased Breast Cancer Risk

Living in an area with high levels of particulate air pollutants (PM2.5) is associated with a greater risk of breast cancer, according to some new research. Air pollution was linked to estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer but not receptor-negative (ER-) tumors.

“We observed an 8% increase in breast cancer incidence for living in areas with higher PM2.5 exposure,” said Alexandra White, Ph.D., lead author. “Although this is a relatively modest increase, these findings are significant given that air pollution is a ubiquitous exposure that impacts almost everyone.”

The study included data collected from over 500,000 men and women who lived across 6 states and 2 metropolitan areas. The women, specifically, were followed for about 20 years, and the average concentration of PM2.5 was estimated for each of their home residences.

PM2.5 is a type of air pollutant that’s 2.5 microns in diameter or smaller, meaning it is tiny enough to be inhaled deeply into the lungs. It’s emitted from many sources, including vehicle exhaust, industrial emissions, wood or vegetation burning, and combustion processes.
